Optical Distribution Frame Unites up to 5,376 Fibers

February 14, 2019

R&M is setting new standards for broadband suppliers with its PRIME modules and Freedom of planning when expanding FTTH networks

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – February 14, 2019 – R&M, the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland, is providing FO network operators with greater planning freedom. With the new PRIME modules from R&M, they can now use their fiber distribution hub units in more varied ways than ever before. This means they can design FTTH networks precisely from the outset to suit local requirements and still have the possibility of extending or adapting them later any time they want. PRIME is a highly dense cabling platform for Optical Distribution Frames (ODF). At maximum capacity, 5,376 optical fibers can be connected in an ODF with PRIME modules. And that is setting new standards on the FTTH market.

The new PRIME modules from R&M are setting new standards on the FTTH market.

Above-ground street cabinets and basements, main distributor frames, central offices and POP sites are some of the most important locations for the PRIME ODF racks. Here they form the nodes of local broadband networks such as city rings and feeder networks. PRIME ODF is at home wherever space is limited and a high number of optical fibers need to be wired. The platform is also suitable for fiber optic distribution in data centers. Backhaul networks from mobile communication providers are a further area of use.

With PRIME, R&M implements the principle of modularity. The distributors can be assembled, adapted and extended like separate blocks. This approach makes it possible to plan with manageable investment costs. Network operators only order the specific number of components they actually need (pay as you grow). They can react quickly to local FTTH demand and technical progress and scale broadband networks to suit requirements.

Up to 14 PRIME modules fit in a 19” or ETSI rack. No tools are required for assembly in R&M ETSI racks. This makes technicians’ work faster and makes network operators more flexible. The PRIME modules can be assembled from the front or back in 19″ racks.

A sub-rack can accommodate four PRIME fiber units. They can be combined and equipped in a variety of ways and retrofitted without tools. The PRIME range contains fiber units for fiber optic termination, for splice and breakout cabling as well as for patch cord and overlength storage. When using the Ultra-High Density LC adapters from R&M, the capacity of a PRIME ODF totals 5,376 FO connections. The high packing density results in a decrease in the average costs per port.

Drawer technology protects the fibers during assembly, maintenance and cleaning. The fibers remain in the guide. A channel system protects the fibers on the way to the splice area. The connectors can be detected and operated when the drawer is pushed in and be pulled into a service position for cleaning and inspection.

Networks: Setting the Course Now for Decades to Come

February 1, 2019

Market outlook from R&M CMO Andreas Rüsseler / defining moment

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – January 31, 2019 – Those planning and building networks today are now setting the course for several decades.” Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) portrays this as a decisive moment in its market outlook for 2019. R&M, the globally active Swiss developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, therefore recommends being more precise than ever with forward planning for networks, whether for public broadband networks, private data networks or data centers. “Infrastructures for fiber to the home, mobile communications, the Cloud, smart business, smart factories, smart buildings, smart cities and a wide range of digital applications require a capacity for data traffic that will continue to develop dynamically for decades to come,” says R&M CMO Andreas Rüsseler.

There are several reasons for this:

  • The digital revolution is changing requirements. From this, Andreas Rüsseler concludes: “Those planning networks today need to design them for a need that we’ve never seen before. It is essential, in every project and at every network level, to plan and build infrastructures for huge volumes of data and data transmission that is secure and instantaneous at all times.”
  • R&M anticipates that extensive investments in blanket development will only pay off in the long term. Planners and network operators should, therefore, opt for long-lasting, high-quality products.
  • Valuable fiber optic cables, which are being more and more frequently nowadays, should not need to be replaced after a few years just because they were inadequately measured, to begin with.

New dimensions in all markets

The long-term scale of the digital revolution cannot yet be seen in detail. At the moment, however, many new technological concepts are coming into focus, bringing with them new opportunities and possibilities for the future,” says Andreas Rüsseler.

  • Take the Internet of Things (IoT), for example: Ultra-small sensors, switches, measuring devices, control systems, light sources, safety systems, blinds, heaters, air-conditioning systems, cameras or even medical devices are connected to the Internet. The IoT enables them to be managed efficiently. Data can be merged more easily and used for multiple functions.
  • Another example is Blockchain, the tamper-proof data transaction system. It can protect money transfers, goods, merchandise, industrial and digital products, and much more. The technology is based on a cryptographic, continuous and remotely organized daisy-chaining of data sets. It uses many data centers which work in parallel and permanently synchronize the blockchains via fast networks.

These are just two of the many examples. Trends such as smart business, smart factory, smart mobility, smart city, and smart building also have the potential to bring the Internet into all areas of life and increase the amount of digital information that people generate and move around in the long term,” the R&M CMO anticipates.

The volume of data today lies at 2.5 quintillion Bytes per day (a 1 with 18 zeros). Around 90% of the world’s data has been generated in the last two to three years. And according to Cisco’s comments in the latest Visual Networking Index (VNI), that’s just the beginning. The potential can be seen, for example, in the data-hungry applications virtual and Augmented Reality. By 2022, their market will grow by 670% to USD 209 billion. The number of Internet users is increasing by 7% per year. Social media is gaining eleven new users per second.

These trends in the various segments of the connectivity market confirm our long-term expectations,” says Andreas Rüsseler. R&M splits the market into the areas of public networks, data centers and local area networks (LAN).

R&M Redefines Network Quality; Starts of the worldwide “Better connected” initiative

December 10, 2018

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – December 10, 2018 – R&M, the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland, is launching the «Better connected» initiative. The focus is on the entire life cycle of data networks – from planning to multiple years of operation. The initiative proves why networks incorporating R&M components help to save time and money.

It is all about taking more into account than just the material and installation costs and the common standards when planning data networks. A top-quality installation with higher initial costs is always the less expensive solution over the long term“, says Hermann Christen, Market Development Manager at R&M.

Experts in the more than 40 R&M branches worldwide will be providing consulting services to the markets as part of the initiative. At the same time new training programs are being offered by the R&M Academy which awards places to interested planners, project leads, installers and distributors. Academy graduates become qualified R&M partners. They receive exclusive certificates as well as comprehensive specialist, technical and logistical support in network projects.

Visitors to the site will find out why better quality cabling saves money long term. They can also consult a criteria catalog which supports them in the definition of project goals, the evaluation of the infrastructure as well as in the selection of qualified project partners and services.

The network breakdowns of recent years caused immense damage. Companies lost millions in terms of revenue within just minutes, not to mention their good reputation. Customers lost faith in data centers, the cloud, the Internet of Things and convenient online services“, says R&M of current risks. Hermann Christen: “Permanently fail-safe data networks are essential for business to survive. Which means it is all the more important to prevent faults and downtime throughout the life cycle of a network. Products and systems that have been developed and tested for practice are intended precisely for this purpose.”

Sustainable connectivity solutions are about more than standard-compliant products. At the start of network planning, there should, for example, be detailed specifications as well as independent and verifiable proof of performance for all products. “If you have to start providing proof later, you lose valuable time. Poor documentation leads to higher planning costs,” explains R&M.

Cabling systems have to be able to be installed fast and safely without any complications. This is how to avoid oversights and errors. R&M products usually surpass the attenuation and transmission values recommended by the standards and thus have sufficient reserve to be able to commission installed networks without any delay.

The same demands also apply for maintenance, upgrade, migration and expansion of a network. “The faster and more perfectly these measures can be carried out, the better and less expensive for the operator. A top-quality plug & play system is a good choice because it excludes loss of time,” according to R&M. This is why the Swiss cabling specialist advocates the exclusive use of modular systems which can be exchanged and extended seamlessly like function blocks.

R&M refers to studies by the Ponemon Institute. These indicate that incorrect handling and the subsequent failure of components are two of the three most common causes of network downtime. “These findings confirm our view that quality issues also apply to security and user-friendliness in running network operations,” says Hermann Christen.

Incorrect operation can be minimized thanks to ergonomically improved assembly systems, patch panels and connections. R&M offers a passive security system which prevents tampering with connections. The monitoring system R&MinteliPhy, also developed by R&M, goes one step further. It enables the remote monitoring of each individual connection in real time using sensors.

R&M also lists know-how, support and warranties as quality factors. This is why the cabling manufacturer pursues an extended quality management system. Among other things, experienced R&M employees oversee projects on site from the planning idea through to measurements taken in the formal acceptance procedure.

Planners, project leads and installers can also gain additional qualifications and competencies at R&M. For this purpose the branches offer the R&M Academy Qualified Partner Program (QPP). Among other things, the courses involve participants practicing handling the R&M cabling components. They learn all about the latest technologies and exchange information and experience. R&M grants a 25-year warranty for networks which have been installed correctly by qualified personnel.

R&M is constantly collecting direct feedback and information on user experience. Customer proximity enables transparent exchange. Findings are incorporated in the further development and optimization of the products. This is how practice-oriented solutions can be made, geared to optimal planning and application possibilities as well as cost control over the entire value added chain.

R&M is convinced that high quality in all areas contributes to cost savings over the long term. A network experiences less downtime when the right expert knowledge, better technologies and well-devised protection programs are used. The longer a network is available, the more stable the network operator’s sales revenue.

Ultimately those responsible for the network fulfill the quality and compliance requirements of their companies, customers and insurance company when they can prove greater operational reliability and one-hundred-percent control.
