R&M launches Cat. 8.1 System for all Applications

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – July 4, 2019 – R&M, the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland, is launching a universal Cat. 8.1 cabling system. It supports the fastest data transmission local networks with structured copper cabling achieve today: namely up to 40 Gigabit/s Ethernet. At the same time, the Cat. 8.1 cabling system is backward-compatible as it is based on the standard RJ45 plug-in format. That means: Cat. 6Apatch cords used to date can still be deployed. Networks can still be operated with 10 Gigabit/s Ethernet which is standard today. Data centers and LAN operators do not need any additional adapters, transmission cables or fiber optic interfaces if they are soon migrating to the faster network generations 25 and 40 Gigabit/s Ethernet. After the installation of a basic Cat. 8.1 infrastructure, faster switches and servers can be integrated seamlessly.

The basic Cat. 8.1 infrastructure (Permanent Link) consists of two RJ45 connection modules and a shielded Cat. 8.2/8.1 S/FTP installation cable. The system complies with both standard families: ISO/IEC 11801, Class I, and ANSI/TIA-568.2-D.

Heart of the Cat. 8.1 cabling system from R&M: the connection module in the universal RJ45 format. 

It enables data transmission up to 40 Gigabit/s Ethernet.

The original intent of use for this system was in data centers, particularly with regard to top of rack and end of row cabling. Here, Cat. 8.1 cabling is due to transmit up to 40 Gigabit/s Ethernet (40GBase-T) in future. R&M guarantees the performance of the 24-meter permanent link and up to 30-meter channel depending on the patch cords used. R&M bases its specification on the relevant standards of ISO/IEC and TIA.

The second area of application is in buildings which require extremely fast local data networks. Here the Cat. 8.1 system from R&M supports the new performance level of 25 Gigabit/s Ethernet (25GBASE-T). The proposed 50m distance in the draft technical report ISO/IEC TR11801-9909 for this bandwidth thus covers roughly two thirds of all typical link lengths in office buildings. Furthermore, the Cat. 8.1 cabling system is suitable for four-pair Power over Ethernet (4PPoE).

The Cat. 8.1 connection module is based on the design of R&M’s Cat. 6A module – a top product which has won the iF Award. In the Cat. 8.1 module, the copper conductors are terminated using insulation displacement contacts (IDC). R&M supplies an optional termination tool. Installers can use it to produce enough strength to quickly and correctly press the wires into the IDC and at the same time cut off the overlengths.

R&M Cabling for Smart Buildings

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – June 20, 2019 – Smart buildings can only be smart if all digital organs can communicate with each other without any barriers. This is something pointed out by Reichle & De-Massari (R&M), the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland. In a recent statement, R&M emphasizes: “The idea of the smart building is based on a uniform nerve structure and a common language in the form of structured cabling for data networks and the Internet Protocol.”

Currently R&M is providing increasing amounts of information on the important role of cabling for intelligent buildings. “We want investors, architects, planners, installers and system integrators to be able to really get going. They need to know that they are creating a durable basis for future-proof digitalized building automation.

R&M argues: “Uniform, application-neutral and manufacturer-independent connectivity can replace what has to date been the standard separation of IT and field bus components. The whole building is then speaking one language. Furthermore this simplifies installation and maintenance. Material and operating expenses decrease.”

R&M is giving the real estate world an all-in-one package for networking smart buildings. It unites the cabling for local data networks (LAN) and the Ethernet or Internet protocol (Ethernet/IP) with related technologies. This includes Wireless LAN, Power over Ethernet (PoE) and Single Pair Ethernet (SPE). This symbiosis leads to All over IP (digital building automation exclusively over the Internet Protocol).

For R&M, new installation concepts such as the digital ceiling are of central significance here. “With digital ceiling, we are extending the data network like a honeycomb on the ceiling throughout the entire building to be able to connect devices to building automation. The concept consists of zones with pre-installed connecting points (service outlets) in the ceiling. R&M provides sophisticated installation solutions for precisely this purpose. They make the building ‘ready for intelligence‘,” explains R&M Market Manager Matthias Gerber. Real estate managers or tenants can then make use of the digitization with ‘Plug and Play’ – fit for purpose, without barriers, fast and at low cost. The only thing left to do is plug in network switches, sensors, controls, WLAN access points and other distributed building services.

A key technology for smart buildings is Power over Ethernet (PoE), in other words powering digital end devices using data cable,” stresses R&M. PoE infrastructures make it possible to connect applications in a smart building with just one cabling connection. Virtual reality screens can be powered with PoE and at the same time be addressed via the data network. PoE can feed the LED lighting of entire buildings. In addition, every individual light is given its own IP address. R&M develops contacts and connectors which are ready to deal with the electrical challenges of these PoE applications.

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) compresses the LAN cabling to two wires and miniaturized connectors. The connection density of the terminal equipment can thus be increased significantly. This technology extends the digital ceiling cabling perfectly. R&M was involved in the standardization of SPE connectivity and sees SPE as a future key technology in the cabling program for smart buildings.

Finally the R&M package also supports Passive Optical LAN (POLAN). This is FO cabling for extended systems such as airports, malls, resorts and hotels. POLAN delivers virtually unlimited bandwidth for miles.

The cabling of smart buildings should be application-neutral and manufacturer-independent. The concept of structured cabling for data networks in combination with the Internet Protocol is perfect for this. Using digital ceiling, this concept can be extended throughout a building in the form of a honeycomb.

WETZIKON, SWITZERLAND BENGALURU, India – June 13, 2019 – R&M, the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland, is showing real estate managers an inexpensive way to faster data traffic. They can use the existing cabling to increase bandwidth enormously in the future. This is of relevance for the forthcoming step from 10 to 25 Gigabit Ethernet in local data networks. Future wireless LAN generations and distributed antenna systems require the higher bandwidth for data traffic in buildings.
R&M’s shielded Cat. 6A RJ45 connection modules which have already been installed thousands of times are perfect for use with 25 Gigabit Ethernet. They have exceptional performance headroom,” says R&M Market Manager LAN CablingMatthias Gerber. Today, clients often install the Cat. 6A RJ45 modules with shielded Cat. 7A AWG22 cables. “This combination satisfies the new standard for transmitting 25 Gigabit Ethernet over 30 meters. That means: The installation is future-proof. With existing cabling and connections, users can quickly get into the next fastest Ethernet generation,” says Matthias Gerber.
To date, 10 Gigabit Ethernet was seen as the fastest data transmission on copper cabling. The 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium adopted the standard for the higher speed in 2017. At the end of 2018, the ISO/IEC published the technical report TR11801-9905 which describes the requirements made of existing installations. “The Cat. 6A and Cat. 7A range, which R&M offers for Class EA installations, satisfies these requirements from the beginning,”explains Matthias Gerber.
 
R&M expects the demand for bandwidth to continue to increase in local data networks. Cellular phone networks are the driving force in this. The next generation of wireless LAN access points requires faster connections than 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Then there are the distributed antenna systems which will distribute 5G services in large buildings. This technology also requires high-performance cabling to the antennas. R&M assumes that bandwidth in the 20 Gigabit Ethernet area and above will have to be covered. R&M recommends: “Local data networks should always be planned so that they can serve the fastest applications. The solution from R&M is already ready for 25 Gigabit Ethernet.”
