R&M Frees Infrastructure Managers from Manual Tasks

November 19, 2019

Newly developed port monitoring cables monitor FO connections of network devices and servers / Full digital control

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – November 19, 2019 – Doing things by hand is often the order of the day at locations where you might expect digitalization to be at its most advanced: in modern data centers. Those responsible for networks document lots of connections using hand-written notes and manually created tables. The typical error quota is around ten percent. There is often a blind spot in the crucial network segment between active devices and patch panels. Due to documentation errors, ports often get forgotten about over the course of time. This is something currently being pointed out by Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland.

R&M wants to free network administrators of this problem and is thus introducing Port Monitoring cables into the data center market. The innovation is making interconnect architectures fully transparent for the first time. The solution monitors all fiber optic connections of the switches, servers and storage devices, and enables digitalized management of the networks. The connections between active devices and patch panels can be documented, visualized and checked seamlessly in real time. The solution displays the status, errors and changes centrally at the administrators’ workplaces. They no longer have to walk through the rows of cabinets and monitor thousands of connections themselves.

The new development consists of RFID miniature antennas (tags) and two-millimeter OM4 FO cables. The tags are fixed on the ports of the active devices. The cables establish the connection to the automated infrastructure management system R&MinteliPhy. There is no need for additional hardware in the patch panel or network cabinet.

R&MinteliPhy identifies the connections using uniquely coded tags. It recognizes the status of the active devices and free ports. R&MinteliPhy documents new connections and any exchanged devices in real time. It knows immediately whether patch cords were plugged in or unplugged according to plan and, if necessary, emits an alarm. Sources of error can be localized precisely and patching errors rectified faster than ever before. R&M estimates time savings of at least 30 percent in comparison to the standard administration processes to date.

R&MinteliPhy can generate and standardize assignments for service technicians, display them in the sensor bar at the rack as well as monitor them. The system helps plan and control Moves, Adds & Changes (MAC). Administrators can detect risks and lack of resources at an earlier stage. It takes just a few clicks of the mouse to create proof for audits.

The port monitoring cables harmonize with FO connectors of the type R&M LC-QR. The solution is currently compatible with the Ultra-High Density patch panel R&M Netscale.

R&M Simplifies Monitoring of Fiber Optic Networks

November 14, 2019

R&M develops passive fiber optic TAP modules for distributors with maximum port density. Fully integrated in structured cabling and running network operations.

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – November 14, 2019 – Are the network and applications delivering the desired performance? How, with what and how quickly can that be proved? Network and infrastructure managers in data centers look for an answer to these questions on a daily basis. And the answer comes from Reichle & De-Massari (R&M), the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland.

R&M has developed TAP modules (Traffic Access Points*) for the high density distribution platform Netscale 120. They facilitate the monitoring of FO networks in data centers. The new monitoring instrument can be completely integrated in the structured MPO and LC Duplex cabling. The TAP modules are situated like distribution trays directly in the Netscale housing. They do not need their own space in the rack. Trays and ports can be integrated, exchanged as well as patched on the front and back in a flash during operation.

Netscale 120 TAP modules work with the technology of passive splitters. They monitor the incoming and outgoing data streams in parallel in real time without influencing network performance. The splitters are fixed in the TAP trays.

Those responsible for networks now gain complete control over the operation of the fiber optic infrastructures. They gain insight into the performance, workloads and availability of the networks.

Netscale 120 TAP modules are an infrastructure insurance policy. Network managers can use them to prove, both within the company and to customers, that they adhere to the agreed service quality and that company-critical applications can run smoothly,” says Dr. Thomas Wellinger, R&M Market Manager Data Center. “What’s more, data centers use the racks to full capacity. When fully assembled, Netscale 120 TAP modules can monitor up to 240 LC ports on three height units. A record,” says Dr. Thomas Wellinger. The R&M range also includes a variant for Cisco BiDi operation.

R&M recommends installing TAP modules proactively and initially using them as a standard module for structured cabling. Dr. Thomas Wellinger: “Assembling in new property is less expensive than installing at a later date which in some cases could result in critical failures. If necessary, the monitoring equipment can be inserted into the tapped ports during operation.”

*A TAP (Traffic Access Point) consists of a passive FO splitter. In a fully bi-directional network, it takes an identical copy of the optical signals from the fiber without causing additional latency or packet loss. One of the two data streams flows on with the data traffic; the other is used for tapping. Using the tapped data traffic, measuring equipment can illustrate data on failure, performance and use in real time.

TAP solutions from R&M unite the Traffic Access Point and the tapping of the physical layer in a tray. Conventional solutions are usually integrated in a network as separate components. R&M’s integrated approach makes it possible to add and remove ports for tapping data traffic without having to interrupt operation.

TAPs support data protection and network security. The passive splitter technology prevents any hacking attacks from outside. Only authorized people get anywhere near the TAP modules providing access controls correspond to the standards. The spatial streams can be monitored in compliance with data protection regulations.

Fast Cabling for Colocation Data Centers

November 12, 2019

On-site service with separate support and tailor-made cabling saves planning work and accelerates preparation time

WETZIKON, Switzerland / BENGALURU, IndiaNovember 12, 2019 – R&M, the globally active developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, based in Wetzikon, Switzerland, is launching a program for colocation data centers. “We are freeing the operators from time-consuming planning and cabling. Wherever in the world their data center is or is being built,” says Emmanuel Beydon, R&M Key Account Manager for theColocation Market. The reason for the initiative: Several trends are currently challenging the industry and its connectivity. A growing number of discerning customers with corresponding capacity possibilities have to be accommodated. Resources have to be built up for the exploding data traffic and latency minimized. Migrations to 100, 200 to 400 Gigabit Ethernet are just around the corner. At the same time, the aim is for data centers to operate in a more agile manner at lower cost. “To ensure the operators can manage everything at the same time and concentrate on their business strategy, we take care of the engineering for connectivity,” continues Emmanuel Beydon.

The program starts off with individual support on site from the R&M branches and specialists. Due to the numerous sites and plants on all continents, R&M can cover all market regions. The staff is trained in the R&M standards. The R&M branches take on project responsibility. Direct contact shortens response times. “We always see ourselves as the local partner,” explains Emmanuel Beydon. “And at the same time we act globally for those business partners who offer international standards for their hyperscale customers.”

The service package includes, among other things, consulting, evaluation and help in the planning of fiber optic network infrastructures. Furthermore, R&M takes care of logistics, cabling work, measuring and controlling. R&M branches assemble network distributors and racks, and bring them into the building as turnkey solutions. “We effectively act as an extended workbench for planners, network managers and technicians,” says Emmanuel Beydon.

R&M develops separate, custom-tailored solutions as required. Emmanuel Beydon: “Tailor-made optical distribution platforms simplify installation and ensure cost efficiency.” Platforms for the distributed sites of an operator all over the world can also be standardized.
