Newly Independent SUSE Better Positioned to Deliver Open Innovation to Meet Customers’ Needs on Their Terms

April 24, 2019

SUSE continues to adapt so its customers and partners can succeed

NASHVILLE, Tenn / BENGALURU, India – April 24, 2019 – The newly independent, standalone SUSE® is proving to the market it is prepared better than ever before to focus on customer needs and deliver the right technology, support and services to help them navigate the business demands surrounding their own digital transformations. SUSE is showing customers how to create solutions that make sense for their businesses as they tap into an extensive open source-based ecosystem that gives them greater freedom and flexibility to enable their digital transformation.

As exciting as SUSE’s growth and innovation has been over the past several years, we are just getting started,” said Nils Brauckmann, CEO of SUSE. “SUSE is better positioned to bring more innovation to customers and partners faster through both organic growth and acquisitions, keeping us on track to provide them with the open solutions that keep them ahead with their own customers in their own markets. We continue to adapt so our customers and partners can succeed.”

SUSE’s business momentum can be seen in its recent growth and related expansion. Revenue grew approximately 15 percent in fiscal year 2018, and the business is about to surpass the $400 million revenue mark for the first time. All regions of the world saw revenue growth in the past year.

SUSE continues to invest heavily in people, with most growth happening in engineering followed by sales and services. More than 300 people were added in the past 12 months, with SUSE staff now approaching 1,750 globally. SUSE continues to be an international organization with employees in 34 countries representing 75 different nationalities.

Jay Lyman, 451 Research principal analyst, said, “SUSE’s independence should allow the company to maintain its strength in the operating system market (where its Linux is a leading option) while also investing dynamically in additional, emerging markets such as cloud native and DevOps. While SUSE benefited from the investments made by its previous parent companies, it is now better positioned to move beyond past successes and markets to capitalize on new opportunities.”

Enterprises today continue to drive demand for cloud and data center solutions along with their growing need for hybrid and multi-cloud solutions, application delivery, containerization and microservices. SUSE’s open approach enables digital transformation on a customer’s own terms.

In other news at SUSECON, SUSE is delivering new hybrid and multi-cloud capabilities and application delivery innovations that help customers transform their digital infrastructures in their own way, as quickly as they need to.

  • SUSE Cloud Application Platform 1.4 will be available this month, and it is the first software distribution to introduce a Cloud Foundry Application Runtime in an entirely Kubernetes-native architecture.
  • SUSE is now a Kubernetes Certified Service Provider to provide exceptional support and service to enterprises using SUSE Cloud Application Platform and SUSE CaaS Platform application delivery solutions.
  • SUSE’s latest enterprise-ready OpenStack Cloud platform will also be available in April as SUSE OpenStack Cloud 9. Based on OpenStack Rocky, SUSE OpenStack Cloud 9 is the first release to integrate the best of SUSE OpenStack Cloud and HPE OpenStack technology into one, single-branded release.

At SUSECON in Nashville, SUSE demonstrated its investment in collaboration and choice for partners, customers and community members as the company has redefined “open” to be more than just open source code. Highlighting the SUSECON theme “My kind of open,” SUSE showcased that openness in the latest software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions that are flexible enough to be deployed anywhere and are fueling digital transformation and business growth. SUSE Completes Move to Independence, Reaffirms Commitment to Customers, Partners and Open Source Communities as Industry’s Largest Independent Open Source Company

March 18, 2019

SUSE adds C-level executives to ensure continued success, momentum and growth as a leading provider of enterprise-grade, open source software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions to enable hybrid and multi-cloud workload management

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – March 18, 2019 – SUSE® today announced the completion of the company’s acquisition from Micro Focus by growth investor EQT and its status as a standalone business. With its ongoing momentum, portfolio expansion and successful execution in the marketplace, SUSE is now even better positioned to focus on the needs of customers and partners as a leading provider of enterprise-grade, open source software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions that enable customer workloads anywhere – on premise, hybrid and multi-cloud – with exceptional service, value and flexibility.

The newly independent SUSE has expanded its executive team, adding new leadership roles and experience to foster its continued momentum into this next stage of corporate development. Enrica Angelone has been named to the new post of chief financial officer, and Sander Huyts is SUSE’s new chief operations officer. Thomas Di Giacomo, formerly chief technology officer for SUSE, is now president of Engineering, Product and Innovation. All three report to SUSE CEO Nils Brauckmann.

Current IT trends make it clear that open source has become more important in the enterprise than ever before,” Brauckmann said. “We believe that makes our status as a truly independent open source company more important than ever. Our genuinely open, open source solutions, flexible business practices, lack of enforced vendor lock-in and exceptional service are more critical to customer and partner organizations, and our independence coincides with our single-minded focus on delivering what is best for them. Our ability to consistently meet these market demands creates a cycle of success, momentum and growth that allows SUSE to continue to deliver the innovation customers need to achieve their digital transformation goals and realize the hybrid and multi-cloud workload management they require to power their own continuous innovation, competitiveness and growth.”

SUSE’s transition is timely as containers are enabling new levels of agility and the need for digital transformation built on open source software-defined infrastructure and application delivery technologies is growing. SUSE’s heritage in open source software, strong brand and array of innovative solutions, including container management, ideally position it to capitalize on this market dynamic, creating tremendous value for customers and partners. EQT’s backing and SUSE’s independent status will enable the company’s continued expansion as advanced innovation drives growth in SUSE’s core business as well as in emerging technologies, both organically and through add-on acquisitions.

Al Gillen, Group Vice President, Software Development and Open Source, IDC, said, “SUSE’s return to the role of an independent open source software company comes at a pivotal point in the industry. Open source software is the favored way to build new solutions today and is irreplaceable as the foundation for most public cloud services. As one of the industry’s largest purely open source software companies, SUSE’s independence will benefit customers as the company builds on its heritage of technical excellence, value-driven partnerships and community engagement to deliver timely technology solutions to the market.”

SUSE’s expanded leadership team led by CEO Brauckmann will build on the rapid growth of the past eight years as the company continues to deliver and innovate based on current and future market requirements. As it has for more than 25 years, SUSE remains committed to an open source development and business model and to actively participating in communities and projects to bring open source innovation to the enterprise as high-quality, reliable and usable solutions. This truly open, open source model refers to the flexibility and freedom of choice provided to customers and partners to create best-of-breed solutions that combine SUSE technologies with other products and technologies in their IT landscape through open standards and at different levels in their architecture, without forcing a locked-in stack. This focus on openness is embedded in SUSE’s culture, differentiates it in the marketplace and has been key to its success.

Johannes Reichel, Partner at EQT, said, “SUSE’s market presence, strong leadership, focus on customer success and ability to partner successfully have been and will continue to be crucial as SUSE enters this next phase of its evolution. It is in the right place at the right time with the right resources to help transform the way organizations around the world do business.”

As an independent, trusted partner for enterprise digital transformation, SUSE delivers software solutions, support and services through a multinational organization and an enabled, qualified partner ecosystem underpinned by secure enterprise-grade technologies. SUSE is currently involved in more than 100 open source projects, supported by employees around the world. SUSE Partners with Intel and SAP to Accelerate IT Transformation with Persistent Memory in the Data Center

January 17, 2019

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications is the first enterprise Linux optimized for Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory with SAP HANA® workloads

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – January 17, 2019 – SUSE® today announced support for Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory with SAP HANA®. Running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, SAP HANA users can now take advantage of high-capacity Intel Optane DC persistent memory in the data center. Users can optimize their workloads by moving and maintaining larger amounts of data closer to the processor and minimizing the higher latency of fetching data from system storage during maintenance. Support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory, currently available in beta from multiple cloud service providers and hardware vendors, is another way SUSE is helping customers transform their IT infrastructures to reduce costs, deliver higher performance and compete more efficiently.

Persistent memory technology will spark new applications for data access and storage,” said Thomas Di Giacomo, SUSE CTO. “By offering a fully supported solution built on Intel Optane DC persistent memory, businesses can take greater advantage of the performance of SAP HANA. SUSE continues to partner with companies like SAP and Intel to serve customers worldwide who are looking to fuel growth by transforming their IT infrastructure. It is their needs that drive the direction of our innovation.”

Alper Ilkbahar, Vice President and General Manager of the Non-volatile Memory and Storage Solutions Group at Intel, said, “Intel Optane DC persistent memory represents a new class of memory and storage technology architected specifically for data center usage. This new memory class is designed to enable cost-effective, large-capacity in-memory database solutions, help provide greater system uptime and faster recovery after power cycles, and deliver higher-performance cloud-scale applications. By working together with SUSE and SAP to bring this transformative technology to our customers, we can help enable them to take advantage of a whole new generation of applications and services that can deliver revolutionary capabilities for the datacentric era.”

Martin Heisig, SAP HANA Technology Innovation Network, said, “The ability to deliver persistent memory for SAP HANA is a significant milestone in our ongoing relationship with SUSE and Intel. The SAP Digital Core is built on the concept of simplifying the infrastructure for increased productivity and real-time insights.”

SAP HANA offers businesses of all sizes a high-performance database solution for their SAP applications. Customers using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications running SAP HANA workloads on Intel Optane DC persistent memory can expect infrastructure cost savings alongside a reduction in management overhead. Because SAP HANA workloads run on Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise is currently the only solution to offer support for SAP HANA and Intel Optane DC persistent memory.

Support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory with SAP HANA workloads running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications is included in SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 4, which is now available worldwide. For more information about SUSE Linux Enterprise, visit www.suse.com/sles.
