SUSE Builds Momentum with Innovative Open Source Offerings, Revenue Growth and Commitment to Enterprise Customers

August 30, 2018

SUSE poised to establish itself as a stand-alone company pending its acquisition by growth investor EQT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia / BENGALURU, India – August 30, 2018 – SUSE® is an open source pioneer that has provided enterprise-grade software to tens of thousands of organizations for more than 25 years. As SUSE prepares to embark upon its next phase of corporate development as a stand-alone company*, it continues to grow and build momentum with its core products, emerging solutions, communities and partners while expanding its presence in new market segments. SUSE is better positioned than ever before to shepherd enterprises through the demands of digital transformation with open source innovation and expertise in software-defined infrastructure, application delivery and cloud technologies.

SUSE has thrived for decades by following two simple principles – listen to the customer, and embrace innovation and change on their behalf,” said Nils Brauckmann, CEO of SUSE. “SUSE is on a growth trajectory, expanding both organically and through technology acquisition. This ‘build-and-buy’ expansion model creates continuous value for customers and drives sustainable growth for both the top and bottom lines of the business. As the business grows, SUSE remains committed to being the open, open source company, where open refers to the freedom of choice provided to customers and not just our code.”

SUSE’s investment in flexibility and its evolution from a Linux vendor to a cloud, software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions company has generated momentum and profitable growth as the organization continuously adapts to the requirements of partners and customers. As organizations face increasing pressure to become more agile and economically efficient in order to grow, compete and survive, they must leverage digital assets, information and an explosion of new software innovation to enable their digital transformation. SUSE builds from its Linux heritage and works with an ecosystem of partners and communities to adapt and secure open source solutions backed by superior service and support. These emerging infrastructure technologies are built on open source and Linux, and they create new levels of freedom and flexibility for customers.

Jay Lyman, Principal Analyst for 451 Research, said, “Over the past few years, SUSE has expanded its portfolio into new areas, such as storage, cloud, containers and application delivery. With new independence and backing from Swedish private equity (PE) firm EQT Partners, SUSE is answering market demand for a neutral, yet comprehensive hybrid cloud platform that supports multiple public and private clouds as well as on-premises infrastructure integration with software such as its SUSE Linux Enterprise 15.”

SUSE’s leadership in established and emerging markets is evident globally, as its customers include nine of the 10 largest aerospace companies worldwide, 10 of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers, four of the five largest banks in the world, half of the world’s largest supercomputers, and 80 percent of the Fortune Global 50. In addition, 70 percent of all SAP applications running on Linux run on SUSE Linux Enterprise, including more than 90 percent of SAP HANA deployments. SUSE created and has led the mainframe Linux market for more than 17 years.

Kathy Bennett, Vice President, IBM Systems ISV Ecosystem Technical Development & Support, said, “As founding members of the Linux Foundation, IBM continues working with SUSE on key open source initiatives including bringing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server forward as a fully supported, enterprise-grade operating system optimized for IBM platforms including IBM Z, LinuxOne and Power Systems. Our work together for supporting SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems, KVM on the Z architecture, IBMz/VM support and integration with cloud and container-based technologies is accelerating customer adoption of open source platforms.

Scott Farrand, Vice President, Hybrid IT-Platform Software at HPE, said, “At HPE, we are committed to strengthening open source and open standards initiatives across the industry and have been leading efforts in the space, with a special focus on Linux, for more than 15 years. Our ongoing collaboration with SUSE on Linux, OpenStack and other projects drives our joint efforts to deliver valuable open source-based solutions to the market.”

Other milestones charting SUSE business momentum include:

  • For the six months ending April 30, 2018, SUSE saw revenues of $182.9 million, which represents continued growth of approximately 17 percent over the same period in the previous year. Adjusted EBITDA for that period was $56 million, nearly 23 percent year-over-year growth.
  • Since August 2017, SUSE’s employee base has grown nearly 20 percent to approximately 1,400 employees today, as the company has invested heavily in its engineering and customer services organizations.
  • Since 2013, more than 10,700 partner applications and 7,600 hardware systems have been certified to run with SUSE software.
  • To ensure quality service and customer engagement, more than half of SUSE employees are focused on development and support. Ninety percent of SUSE customers are satisfied with their experience with SUSE engineers, and two-thirds of SUSE customers rate SUSE engineers with a perfect score.
  • SUSE’s commitment to open source software and communities continues to grow, with the company currently engaged with more than 100 open source projects. A founding member of more than 10 open source organizations, SUSE has board representation on many, including the OpenStack Foundation, Linux Foundation, Cloud Foundry Foundation, CNCF, OPNFV (Linux Foundation Networking umbrella project), Open Mainframe and OpenHPC.

SUSE has been an active, productive and open member of The Linux Foundation since before I got involved in 2006,” said Dan Kohn, Executive Director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. “With CNCF, I’m particularly appreciative of their early engagement in what has become the Certified Kubernetes program, and their ongoing commitment to bringing innovation and interoperability to the enterprise as high-quality, reliable and usable solutions.”

SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 kernel tuned for Microsoft Azure increases customer agility and efficiency by enabling faster access to new Azure features

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – August 22, 2018

SUSE® today announced the availability of the first enterprise Linux kernel tailored for Microsoft Azure. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 on-demand instances now run on a custom-tuned kernel for workloads on Microsoft Azure that provides enhanced performance and faster boot speeds along with a decreased memory footprint. The Azure-tuned kernel enables faster access to new and upcoming Azure features, helping customers to be more agile. SUSE is working with Microsoft and other partners to adapt and secure open source solutions that allow customers to manage complexity, reduce cost and deliver business-critical services that power digital transformation.

SUSE’s collaboration with Microsoft is based on meeting customers’ evolving needs, enabling innovation and minimizing disruption to their business,” said Gerald Pfeifer, Vice President of Products and Technology Programs at SUSE. “Optimized SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for Azure public cloud users is a direct result of SUSE’s open, open source approach to solving real-world customer challenges.”

KY Srinivasan, General Manager, Enterprise Open Source Group at Microsoft Corp., said, “We’ve worked closely with SUSE to ensure customers using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server have a first-class experience with Microsoft Azure. The new Azure-tuned kernel allows those customers to quickly take advantage of new Azure services such as Accelerated Networking with SR-IOV, Write Accelerator and other functionality on a cadence that aligns with the Azure engineering team’s release cycle.”

Customers can expect SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 to have measurable performance benefits, including a potentially 25 percent faster network throughput and a 23 percent reduction in average latency. By default, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 instances on Azure will run on this custom-tuned kernel, although customers have the flexibility to easily switch back to the standard kernel using the package manager, Zypper. In addition to the Azure-tuned kernel, customers using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on Azure benefit from a number of tools and resources for cloud-native deployments that are part of the SUSE Public Cloud Module, such as the ability to manage Azure resources through a Linux command prompt.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with the Microsoft Azure-tuned kernel is now available in the Azure Marketplace with standard pricing and support. For more information about Azure and SUSE, visit www.suse.com/microsoft.

SUSE Partners with Growth Investor EQT to Continue Momentum, Strategy Execution and Product Expansion

July 2, 2018

SUSE announces plans to operate as a fully independent business

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – July 2, 2018 – SUSE® today announced plans to partner with growth investor EQT to continue momentum, strategy execution and product expansion as an independent business. The completion of EQT’s acquisition of SUSE from Micro Focus is subject to Micro Focus shareholder and customary regulatory approvals and is expected to occur in early 2019.

Having enjoyed seven years of continuous expansion, SUSE is set to be acquired from Micro Focus by EQT, which is a development-focused investor with extensive experience in the software industry. Under Micro Focus ownership and with their investment and support, SUSE has developed as a business, cementing its position as a leading provider of enterprise-grade, open source software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions.

In a partnership with EQT, SUSE expects to be equipped to further exploit the excellent market opportunity both in the Linux operating system area as well as in emerging product groups in the open source space. Under the continued leadership of SUSE CEO Nils Brauckmann, SUSE will move to the next stage of its corporate evolution and operate globally as an independent company post-completion of the transaction. To ensure continuity, the SUSE business expects staffing, customer relationships, partnerships, product and service offering, commitment to open source leadership and support for the key open source communities to remain unchanged.

Today is an exciting day in SUSE’s history. By partnering with EQT, we will become a fully independent business,” said Nils Brauckmann, SUSE CEO. “The next chapter in SUSE’s development will continue, and even accelerate the momentum generated over recent years. Together with EQT we will benefit both from further investment opportunities and having the continuity of a leadership team focused on securing long-term profitable growth combined with a sharp focus on customer and partner success. The current leadership team has managed SUSE through a period of significant growth, and now, with continued investment in technology innovation and go to market capability, will further develop SUSE’s momentum going forward.

Johannes Reichel, Partner at EQT Partners and Investment Advisor to EQT VIII, added, “We are excited to partner with SUSE’s management in this attractive growth investment opportunity. We were impressed by the business’ strong performance over recent years as well as its strong culture and heritage as a pioneer in the open source space. These characteristics correspond well to EQT’s DNA of supporting and building strong and resilient companies, and driving growth. We look forward to entering the next period of growth and innovation together with SUSE.”

Market and SUSE Potential

SUSE expects to be well positioned to further realize its potential with backing from EQT to fuel its momentum and build on the progress made under Micro Focus.

SUSE believes the acquisition is well timed as the market driven need for digital transformation, built on open source software-defined infrastructure (SDI) and application delivery technologies, is increasing. Organizations are invariably increasing their focus on open source technologies and solutions to transform their businesses.

With its heritage in open source software, strong brand and array of market leading software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions, SUSE is ideally positioned to capitalize on this market dynamic, creating tremendous value for customers and partners.

Further investment and support will enable SUSE’s continued expansion and advance innovation to drive growth in SUSE’s core business as well as in emerging technologies, both organically and through add-on acquisitions. This investment is a recognition of SUSE’s value and potential and EQT’s belief in the strength of its culture, leadership and existing strategy.

Stability and Continuity

SUSE intends to continue to deliver and innovate based on current and future market requirements, operating with its current mission, vision and strategy. The current leadership team led by SUSE CEO Nils Brauckmann will remain and will continue to focus on the success of customers and partners with a deeply rooted commitment to and engagement with open source communities and projects. Given the relationship-centric nature of the industry retaining the leadership team that has created rapid growth for the past seven years holds significant business value to customers, partners and open source communities.

In keeping with its 25 year history, SUSE intends to remain committed to an open source development and business model and actively participate in communities and projects to bring open source innovation to the enterprise as high quality, reliable and usable solutions. This truly open, open source model, where open refers to the freedom of choice provided to customers and not just our code, is embedded in SUSE’s culture, differentiates it in the market place and has been key to its success.

SUSE and EQT intend for SUSE’s strong leadership, focus on customer success and ability to partner successfully to remain in place as SUSE enters this next evolution of the business.
