SUSECON 2019 in Nashville to feature high-quality technical content and showcase the latest digital transformation innovations

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – November 9, 2018 – With its theme “My kind of open,” SUSECON 2019 is now welcoming attendee registrations and submissions for high-quality technical content via the call for papers. The global SUSE® end-user conference is being held April 1-5, 2019, in Nashville, Tennessee.

By investing in collaboration and choice for partners, customers and community members, SUSE has redefined “open” to be more than just open source code. SUSECON showcases that openness in the latest software-defined infrastructure and application delivery solutions that are flexible enough to be deployed anywhere and are fueling digital transformation and business growth. IT transformation requires new technologies like Kubernetes, flexible and scalable solutions for managing IoT devices and the data they collect, and artificial intelligence/machine learning solutions powered by high-performance computing. SUSECON features these and other open source technologies and solutions that are helping enterprises build modular and agile infrastructures using multi/hybrid cloud approaches that bridge the gap between traditional IT and the IT of tomorrow.

SUSECON has tripled in size over the past few years, while still keeping that unique spirit and energy that comes from the SUSE culture,” said Michael Miller, President of Strategy, Alliances and Marketing for SUSE. “SUSECON combines high-quality technical content with our open approach to business relationships and our commitment to an open, open source development and business model which helps customers and partners succeed. All of which is more critical to IT organizations today than ever before. SUSECON 2019 will feature deep-dive technical sessions, hands-on labs and also direct access to executives and technology experts who will provide a clear view of what’s coming next and what it means for the digital enterprise of the future.”

Each year SUSECON stretches the limits of industry user events by delivering roadmap information, technical content, education and certification opportunities (including complimentary certification exams), and networking in a fun, engaging and uniquely SUSE environment. For example, this year friends of SUSE are invited to participate in SUSECON’s legendary parody music videos. Participants can win a trip to SUSECON in Nashville and have their song produced by SUSE by submitting the top song idea with parody lyrics. The second-place idea and lyrics will also be recorded and posted to YouTube.

The SUSECON Call for Papers is open through Nov. 25. Customers, partners and community enthusiasts are encouraged to submit their session proposals. For more information about SUSECON, including registration, call for papers and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.susecon.com.

SUSE Secures OpenChain Certification, Meeting the New Industry Benchmark for a Simplified Open Source Experience

October 24, 2018

SUSE becomes the first enterprise Linux distributor to certify to OpenChain

EDINBURGH, Scotland / BENGALURU, India – October 24, 2018 – SUSE® today announced it is OpenChain certified, an initiative to make open source licensing more predictable, understandable and efficient for participants of the software supply chain. As a trailblazer in this movement, SUSE is the first enterprise Linux distributor to earn conformance with the OpenChain Project Specification. In doing so, SUSE is helping free industry resources to focus on innovation by reducing complex processes.

The industry standard for managing open source compliance across the supply chain, the OpenChain Project helps to identify and share the core components of a high quality open source licensing program and convey this across the supply chain. OpenChain builds trust in open source by making things simpler, more efficient and more consistent.

For more than 25 years, SUSE has created and engaged with open source communities as a foundation for its enterprise solutions,” said Thomas Di Giacomo, SUSE CTO. “We always engage with the community to better meet customer needs, and our OpenChain certification is another indication to enterprises that we are committed to making their experience with open source software more reliable and cost effective.”

Shane Coughlan, OpenChain General Manager, said, “The OpenChain Standard is suitable for every organization involved in the open source supply chain. Welcoming SUSE to our community is a landmark milestone that illustrates how we positively impact the beginning of the supply chain. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with a great team toward goals that will ultimately benefit thousands of companies across the globe.”

SUSE’s OpenChain certification is underpinned by the recently published SUSE Open Source Policy, which publicly shares SUSE’s longtime values, procedures and guidelines for open source software development and engagement.

Ralf Flaxa, SUSE President of Engineering, said, “Securing OpenChain compliance was a logical step for SUSE, as OpenChain provides an industry format that documents our existing R&D process that we have refined over many years. With so much of our engineering efforts tied to openSUSE and many other open source communities, programs such as OpenChain will enable us to ensure we are using equivalent terminology and guidelines so more time is spent on innovation and less on process.”

SUSE Expands Open Source Software Education to Hundreds of Academic Institutions Worldwide

October 17, 2018

Now in more than 400 organizations, SUSE Academic Program is preparing open source developers to meet the changing demands of the digital economy

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – October 17, 2018 – SUSE® is expanding its support for the next generation of open source software developers through the global growth of the SUSE Academic Program. The program is preparing developers in industries of all types to meet the changing demands of the digital economy by providing open source knowledge, training materials and a low-cost education buying program for the education community.

The SUSE Academic Program, founded in May 2017, has grown to include more than 400 universities, schools, libraries and other academic institutions. The program has also increased its support resources in North America and aims to double the number of participants in the next six months.

SUSE has long been a champion of open source education, and our existing links to academia have allowed us to work with a high number of schools in a short period of time,” said Sander Huyts, SUSE Vice President and Academic Program lead. “We are committed to growing open source skills and education at the academic level, because we view them as critical to the long-term health of our industry and as fundamental building blocks of modern technology. We will continue to ramp resources and support to ensure open source continues to thrive.”

Demand for open source skills is at an all-time high and increasing every year. According to the Linux Foundation’s 2018 Open Source Jobs Report, hiring open source talent is a priority for 83 percent of hiring managers, an increase from 76 percent in 2017. SUSE’s Academic Program provides a variety of services to help meet the demand for talent and advance open source knowledge. This includes training for certified Linux and other courses, student curriculum materials for faculty and staff, free SUSE products for educational or lab use, a special SUSE buying program for educational institutions, development tools, and access to knowledge base, forums and technical support.

SUSE Operates Across Communities to Deliver Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry Innovation to the Enterprise

October 10, 2018

SUSE Operates Across Communities to Deliver Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry Innovation to the Enterprise

BASEL, Switzerland / BENGALURU, India – October 10, 2018 – SUSE® today announced that a new Kubernetes-native implementation of the popular Cloud Foundry development model is coming to SUSE Cloud Application Platform, advancing the company’s drive to help enterprises accelerate application delivery, speed innovation and increase business agility. This is SUSE’s latest move to provide Kubernetes users with the top cloud native DevOps experience by combining Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry technologies. SUSE Cloud Application Platform boosts developer productivity with automation that eliminates the need to build and manage container images.

SUSE is including technology from open source Project Eirini that allows Kubernetes to be used as the container orchestration engine for deploying and managing applications through Cloud Foundry. Eirini allows operators to choose Kubernetes functionality to orchestrate application container instances in SUSE Cloud Application Platform while retaining the Cloud Foundry user experience familiar to many application developers.

SUSE provides high productivity solutions for cloud native application delivery,” said Gerald Pfeifer, SUSE Vice President of Products and Technology Programs. “Our approach is to identify leading open source technologies and bring them together in a way that makes sense for our customers. Today, that means bringing the unsurpassed productivity of the Cloud Foundry model together with modern Kubernetes infrastructure in SUSE Cloud Application Platform. This unique combination enables our customers to reduce complexity and become more agile to meet the changing demands of the digital economy.”

SUSE began to integrate Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry in 2017 by containerizing Cloud Foundry and running it in Kubernetes. That reduced the Cloud Foundry footprint and made it easier for Kubernetes users to manage. Replacing Cloud Foundry’s internal scheduler with Kubernetes is the next step, providing a top-to-bottom Kubernetes-native implementation of Cloud Foundry and further simplifying SUSE Cloud Application Platform for Kubernetes users.

One of the greatest strengths of open source is its community-driven approach to software advancement, encouraging the free flow of ideas to spur innovation,” said Dan Kohn, Executive Director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. “SUSE’s collaborations across the CNCF and Cloud Foundry communities reflect our common goal of improving the Kubernetes developer and user experiences.”

Chip Childers, CTO of the Cloud Foundry Foundation, said, “The Cloud Foundry Foundation is excited to see SUSE’s contributions to the Cloud Foundry community’s efforts around the Kubernetes platform. It’s an example of an enterprise solution emerging as a result of the open source ecosystem actively building bridges between projects, communities and technologies.”

SUSE Cloud Application Platform is a modern, Kubernetes-based application delivery platform used by software development and operations teams to streamline lifecycle management of traditional and new cloud native applications. Bringing together industry-leading Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry technologies, the platform facilitates DevOps process integration to accelerate innovation, improve IT responsiveness and maximize return on investment.

Nicolas Christener, CEO/CTO at Adfinis SyGroup AG, said, “Because SUSE Cloud Application Platform runs in Kubernetes, it’s relatively simple for us to use in our multi-cloud environment. We run the platform on public cloud Kubernetes services for testing purposes and then deploy to private cloud Kubernetes infrastructure for production. It works like a charm.”

SUSE plans to include the Kubernetes-native implementation of Cloud Foundry featuring the Project Eirini Kubernetes scheduler in the next major release of SUSE Cloud Application Platform next year. SUSE is showing an early version of the new capabilities at the Cloud Foundry Summit this week in Basel, Switzerland, in booth #14.
