SUSE Helps Customers Capitalize on Kubernetes with Enhanced CaaS Platform

June 20, 2018

SUSE solution enables customers to accelerate application delivery to meet the demands of the digital economy

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – June 20, 2018 – SUSE® today unveiled SUSE CaaS Platform 3, the next advancement of the solution that accelerates delivery of modern applications for the digital economy. SUSE CaaS Platform delivers Kubernetes innovations in a complete enterprise-class container management solution that lets application development and DevOps teams more easily deploy, manage and scale container-based applications and services.

SUSE is focused on delivering an exceptional operator experience with SUSE CaaS Platform. With deep competencies in infrastructure, systems, process integration, platform security, lifecycle management and enterprise-grade support, SUSE ensures IT operations teams can deliver the power of Kubernetes to their users quickly, securely and efficiently.

In this era of digital transformation, IT organizations need to be more agile than ever,” said Gerald Pfeifer, Vice President of Products and Technology Programs at SUSE. “Properly deployed, Kubernetes leads to agility. But before application teams can use Kubernetes, the platform itself needs to be in place. It needs to be secure, well controlled and maintained. SUSE CaaS Platform helps enterprises provide and consume Kubernetes more easily with a complete solution that is designed with the platform operator, as well as the platform user, in mind.”

Massimo Montecchi, CEO/CTO of IT Solutions Provider BS Company Srl, said, “Bringing Kubernetes to life is more than just installing the software and turning it on. We needed to integrate the platform into our larger IT environment, including systems, processes and cloud infrastructure. It was straightforward with SUSE CaaS Platform, which helped us get Kubernetes up and running quickly. SUSE CaaS Platform also gives us enterprise-grade reliability and flexibility that are critical in this era of ever-evolving technology and innovation.”

SUSE CaaS Platform 3 expands choices for cluster optimization, provides new support for more efficient and secure container image management, and simplifies deployment and management of long-running workloads. It allows customers to:

  • Optimize cluster configuration with expanded data center integration and cluster reconfiguration options. Setting up a Kubernetes environment is simplified with improved integration of private and public cloud storage and automatic deployment of the Kubernetes software load balancer. A new SUSE toolchain module also allows customers to tune the MicroOS container operating system to support custom configuration. With the new cluster reconfiguration capabilities, they can transform a start-up cluster into a scalable and highly available environment.
  • Manage container images more efficiently and securely with a local container registry. Customers can download a container image from an external registry once, then save a copy in their local registry for sharing among all nodes in the cluster. Connecting to an internal proxy rather than an external registry and downloading from a local cache rather than a remote server improves security and performance whenever a cluster node pulls a trusted image from the local registry. In addition, the lightweight CRI-O container runtime, designed specifically for Kubernetes, is introduced in SUSE CaaS Platform 3.
  • Simplify deployment and management of long-running workloads through the Kubernetes Apps Workloads API. This API generally facilitates orchestration (self-healing, scaling, updates, termination) of common types of workloads.

Dan Kohn, Executive Director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), said, “Innovations from the CNCF community, like the SUSE CaaS Platform, help deliver the power of Kubernetes to more enterprise developers and make it easier for organizations to deploy and manage their own cloud native environments.”

SUSE Contributes Advanced Management and Monitoring Capabilities to Ceph, Simplifying Software-Defined Storage for All Users

June 5, 2018

openATTIC concepts and technology providing the basis for a new default management and monitoring dashboard for Ceph

NUREMBERG, Germany / BENGALURU, India – June 5, 2018 – SUSE®, experts at making open source software consumable in the enterprise, is contributing the manpower, concepts and architecture of the openATTIC storage management framework to the Ceph open source project, turning it into the new default built-in dashboard for management and monitoring of the Ceph software-defined storage platform. SUSE will continue to provide the core management expertise and developers for driving the functionality and development of the dashboard within Ceph, simplifying administration for all users.

SUSE is committed to the upstream project first, which always turns into better results for the enterprise users who are not far downstream,” said Lenz Grimmer, one of the original openATTIC team members and current SUSE Engineering team lead for openATTIC and the Ceph dashboard. “Our focus is on both contributing to and using innovation from the community and influencing upstream to meet customer needs – ours and those of other open source providers. It’s our bedrock for delivering enterprise-hardened solutions, and we know the contribution of openATTIC assets, time and effort to Ceph will improve customer experience and efficiency from the outset. We are looking forward to further enhancing the Ceph dashboard in future releases and encourage other contributors to collaborate with us to support this effort.”

Sage Weil, Chief Architect of the Ceph project, said, “Including the concepts and functionality provided by openATTIC in the upstream Ceph project will bring greater management capabilities to Ceph and help expand Ceph’s adoption in the enterprise as it becomes more manageable and user friendly. Open source community collaboration, like the integration of this work into upstream Ceph, has become a key driver of innovation in today’s world of computing.”

First appearing in the Mimic version of Ceph, the new and improved dashboard will make the Ceph storage platform significantly easier to administer and monitor for project users, especially those without deep command line experience. SUSE is the main contributor to this project in terms of code and human resources, dedicating an entire team to the effort.

Ceph demonstrates all the flexibility and functionality expected of a next-generation enterprise storage platform, but the real challenge for modern storage lies in simplifying its administration and management,” said Steven Hill, Senior Analyst of Storage Technologies at 451 Research. “Establishing the features and concepts provided by openATTIC as the default management and monitoring environment will help make Ceph even more competitive among other enterprise storage offerings and provide a common platform for future development and enhancements.”

The openATTIC management framework is currently part of SUSE Enterprise Storage, an intelligent software-defined storage management solution powered by Ceph technology. It enables organizations to adapt to changing business and data demands by transforming enterprise storage infrastructure with cost-efficient, highly scalable and resilient storage using commodity off-the-shelf servers and disk drives.

Geert Reynaerts, Delivery Director, Hybrid Cloud Solutions & Services at IRIS Professional Solutions, said, “As a service provider, we need technologies that run smoothly and securely. SUSE Enterprise Storage enables rapid provisioning and easy management of extremely scalable unified block, file and object storage on commodity industry-standard hardware, and additional tools like openATTIC combined with methodologies and expert support from SUSE deliver a smooth deployment and simple management of the Ceph-based technology. SUSE Ready Certification for SUSE CaaS Platform Now Available for Partners’ Containerized Applications

May 3, 2018

Enterprise customers can confidently deploy ISV containerized offerings that are tested and supported on SUSE’s container management solution

COPENHAGEN, Denmark / BENGALURU, India May 3, 2018 – SUSE® today introduced SUSE Ready certification for SUSE CaaS Platform, expanding its respected application-certification program for independent software vendors (ISVs). ISVs building containers that use the open source docker container format can now certify their containerized application on SUSE CaaS Platform, an enterprise-class container management solution that enables IT and DevOps professionals to more easily deploy, manage and scale container-based applications and services. SUSE Ready verifies for customers that partner solutions are tested and supported on SUSE software, so they can confidently use compatible and supported third-party solutions that best meet their business requirements, without being locked in to a single vendor.

The SUSE Ready certification program has been well received by partners and customers,” said Frank Rego, Director of The ISV Partner Program at SUSE. “The ISV community is pleased because it allows them to use their existing test methodology to ensure compatibility with SUSE products. Customers appreciate having confidence their solutions are supported by the application experts – the partners who create them. SUSE Ready certifications have grown sharply over the last year, and extending SUSE Ready to SUSE CaaS Platform will further expand the ecosystem and create value for more partners and customers.”

Containers speed application delivery, facilitate application portability, and enable a new class of high-performing cloud native applications. As container use grows, ISVs are increasingly offering a container deployment option for their applications, according to a recent survey of the SUSE ISV ecosystem. SUSE CaaS Platform uses open source Kubernetes to provide enterprises with production-grade container orchestration at scale, answering the ISV need for a platform to manage their containerized software at customer locations.

SUSE Ready is a certification program that allows ISVs to test their applications with SUSE products to ensure interoperability. ISVs perform the testing required for them to support their solution in a SUSE environment. SUSE Ready applications are listed in the SUSE Partner Software Catalog, the primary source for customers looking for supported solutions to run with SUSE software. This searchable database of partner solutions allows ISVs to showcase applications that have been tested and certified with SUSE Linux Enterprise, SUSE OpenStack Cloud and SUSE Enterprise Storage. With the addition of SUSE CaaS Platform to the catalog, ISVs now have a central place to showcase all of their SUSE Ready applications and deployment options, whether physical, virtual, cloud or containerized.

A number of ISVs delivering applications that add value to container deployments are already SUSE Ready certified for SUSE CaaS Platform, including SAP, Micro Focus, Aqua Security, Avi Networks, Datadog, Dynatrace, JFrog, Minio, NeuVector, Pachyderm, Tymlez, Univa and XebiaLabs.

Rahul Tripathi, Vice President of Product Management for Micro Focus, said, “As we continue with container delivery of our applications, SUSE Ready certification for SUSE CaaS Platform will be important to make sure customers can deploy Micro Focus containerized applications into a trusted environment. Having our containerized applications listed in a centralized location alongside our existing catalog entries will not only be great for exposing our customers to their various deployment options but also for leveraging our solutions to manage other SUSE Ready applications.”

Fei Huang, Co-founder and CEO of NeuVector, said, “Customers want to be able to deploy Kubernetes applications with confidence, fully secured for production. SUSE Ready certification for SUSE CaaS Platform provides the confidence that the NeuVector multi-vector container firewall has been fully tested on SUSE CaaS Platform, giving them the ability to protect east-west container traffic, monitor containers for suspicious activity, and scan for vulnerabilities from a single security solution.”

ISVs can easily get started with SUSE Ready certification for SUSE CaaS Platform by joining the SUSE Partner Program, which also provides partner downloads, support, training and joint marketing opportunities for SUSE ISV partners. ISVs can work with SUSE to deploy their containerized applications in a SUSE CaaS Platform test environment for partners. For more information, visit www.suse.com/partners/isv/caas-platform.
